Behind the scenes: product redesign

The components crisis in brief
For more than a year, SOMFY has faced a massive and continuing global shortage of electronic components. Why? In 2020, the Covid pandemic brought some industries to a complete halt, while others stepped up production during the lockdown (such as home IT equipment, IOT and so on).
A rapid and strong economic recovery in the second half of 2020, combined with an acceleration of underlying trends, such as a boom in sales of electric vehicles and home office equipment, led to an unprecedented spike in demand for electronic components. This made it hard for many industries to source parts for their products.

Why is SOMFY experiencing shortages?
The SOMFY Group has also experienced shortages and a rise in demand for its products: following the Covid pandemic, people were more likely than ever to regard their homes as a refuge, and consumers were keen to invest in home improvements, driven partly by the remote-working boom.
From April 2021, SOMFY took measures to secure its supplies and grow its production capacity. Most importantly, it implemented a large-scale redesign plan covering 50% of its products.

What is redesign?
The idea is to replace one or more electronic components in short supply by other equivalent and more technically advanced functionalities – and therefore easier to source because they benefit from significant investment by manufacturers of electronic components.
In practical terms, SOMFY engineers had to revise the electronic environment of the products in question while ensuring the same level of quality and conformity.
In parallel, the SOMFY procurement department strengthened its partnerships with core suppliers to safeguard access to its new-tech components. For example, since the beginning of 2022, SOMFY is among the first 50 preferred clients of ST Microelectronics, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electronic components.

Long-term agility
SOMFY delivered its first redesigned products at the end of 2021 and most products concerned by the plan should be ready by the end of the first half of 2022. The company has now secured 80% of its production and our customer service rate is rising. At the same time, SOMFY’s production sites broke production records in March.

The expert’s view

“Redesign is also an opportunity to streamline costs, improve products, and develop our working methods. Redesigns will happen more regularly in the future as the lifespan of electronic components gets shorter. It’s up to us to turn this challenge into an innovation opportunity!

Florent Pellarin, Vice President Engineering Excellence
